I have found that a translation of the Bible is to convey the meaning of the Ancient Greek and Hebrew texts as accurately as possible to the modern reader.  The New Living Translation is based on the most recent scholarship in the theory of translation.

I enjoy the New King James Version narrated by Stephen Johnson, but there are many other narrators. The readings are word-for-word as in the written Bible.
